So about last night … It was a mid-summer night fever dream of staging, fire, bubbles and storytelling in the special Pete and Patrick language we were never taught , but always understood. At first, it felt like an acid trip, but in reality, it was as if a child's imagination had envisioned a tour. That is what this tour is all about - bringing us back to the way we were before life forced decisions on us..
I really resonated with this quote from Pete on “So Much for The StarDusk”:
The “album is about remembering what it was like to draw before you knew the rules for drawing”.
I’m aware that I was in Cardiff with 5000 fans, but I felt like it was a personal message for me - Just keep making and creating the things that we need to, the way we want to, and things will be a little better. One thing that really stuck with me from the show was the range of different age groups who attended, from children experiencing their first gig, to the older ones with walking sticks and very grey hair. I think that one of the USPs of FOB is that no matter what age you are, there is a song for you (or probably many).
I’m gonna keep saying that every musician at the moment is taking a leaf from Taylor’s (swift) book and is in their era phase of their careers. FOB literally turned the clock back, at one point moving the stage around to make it smaller, almost club like, with a low ceiling and hash direct lighting, creating a level of intimacy that went from feeling like a 5,000-sold-out event to a small 500-cap venue.
It was heartwarming to have Joe back … In March, I was fortunate enough to see the FOB intimate show at Heaven… I’m aware I haven't shut up about how amazing it was. It did feel like a missing piece without him - This was very apparent during “Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet”. It felt like the world was put right when they played it.
They sang their song in a language that no one else could, to a sold-out show that sang their words back to them in the perfect chorus harmony. While they’ve never taught us how to transcribe the words, it’s become our mother tongue all the same.
It was truly one of the best evenings of my life, and I will never stop finding an excuse to talk about it. If you are in Europe or the USA for round two, I urge you to get tickets- you won’t regret it!.
