BRITs Week For War Child - You Me At Six

The BRITs Week For War Child 2024 kicked off last night with performances from Irish singer-songwriter Cian Ducrot and You Me At Six. Now, either one of these shows would have been amazing to experience, but with YM@6 working with a ticking clock towards their retirement (I’m fully refusing to call it split up, I don’t feel like they are “leaving each other”. They are just honouring YM@6 being part of their life but not their whole life), it was the most amazing night ever!

Anyway … let’s talk about the night. Yes, it was just as epic as you might imagine. The juxtaposition of seeing them two nights in a row in 2 very different settings was awesome. From Sunday night going from 2,500 people at Portsmouth Guildhall to the 600 cap of Concorde 2 in Brighton. I’ve never had the opportunity to see YM@6 at an intimate show before and it was such an experience, made even more special because it will probably be one of last opportunities.  Joe from WarChild explained how YM@6 is one of their top artists to contribute to their shows, having taken part 3 times over the years.

Their supports were the very exciting and talented Height and The Xects. Heights rose to the occasion with their catchy beats, playing their new song Astronaut. There was a mix of upbeat tempo beats and slow-down time. 

The Xcets the lads, demand attention. I’ve seen them a few times over the last year, and it’s nice to them stepping into the “rockstarness of it all” The best line I’ve ever heard from a band “we are just like any other band… we moan about the people who left … which they were right to do, they were right to do”

There definitely was a message put forward by YM@6 that they felt an unease towards the things that are happening in the world and that putting on a show with War Child was a small way in which they are trying to help. Proceeds from this show and all the other ones taking place over the next few weeks will help to support War Child’s work that aims to reach children as early as possible when conflict breaks out and stay to support them through their recovery - keeping them safe, helping them learn and cope with their experiences, and equipping them with skills for the future.
